Hypnosis is simply described as an altered state of the conscious mind. It is a bit similar to when you are driving without paying really attention to what you are doing and you find yourself turning to go to work for example when in actual fact you need to go straight to go to the supermarket. Hypnosis is not mind control. You are fully aware even though you may be totally relaxed during trance. People go to different states of trance in different times so your experience may vary from session to session in the same way that your sleep vary from day to day, sometimes it is deeper and sometimes you wake up more easily.

Hypnotherapy is the use of suggestions, metaphors, and other techniques in order to achieve an outcome from the session. There are many different techniques to achieve the goal you want and many are used during the various sessions to achieve good results.

In a very simple word ……NO. It is a state of relaxed, deep focus (the focus is on the words being spoken by the therapist). People usually hear what is going on even though they may be totally relaxed. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy are completely safe and if for some reason there was the need to become alert and do something, you would come out immediately.

Have a chat over the phone with the hypnotherapist you are thinking of using. Look at their testimonials and the courses they have done. See if they are accredited. The accreditation with a professional body means that the hypnotherapist has achieved a good level of training and experience approved by the organisation. National accreditation bodies are organisations like: GHR (General Hypnotherapist Register), NCH (National Council for Hypnotherapists), BSCH (British Society of Clinical Hypnosis).

You should select an hypnotherapist that is warm and friendly, that is easy for you to follow and of whom you like the voice.

  • Serious or current heart condition
  • Blood pressure (extremely high or low)
  • Persistent alcohol or drug abuse
  • Pregnancy – first trimester at least, 2nd trimester on GP’s authorisation, 3rd trimester fine but still with GP’s authorisation
  • Medication – depending on medication involved. Those with drowsiness, have an hypnotic effect, alter the state of mind, are likely to be contraindicated (GP permission may be required)
